Christian Rock Rocks: Bradley Hathaway – A Thousand Angry Panthers

June 30, 2010 · Posted in Read · Comment

bradley112008In this case, we have Bradley Hathaway , easily one of the best songwriters out there today. The acoustic singer-songwriter music that he plays is undoubtedly captivating and just shows his talent. The release of his new EP, titled A Thousand Angry Panthers marks some of his best work yet and possibly the peak of his career, that in fact, started off as spoken word poetry.

The music and songwriting on A Thousand Angry Panthers is heart-wrenching, being some of the most emotional music that I’ve heard in a while that really hits right to the heart. The opening song, “She Was Raised By a Man With a Sickness,” doesn’t fail to show this, with the delicate vocals from Hathaway, whose voice seems to be perfect for setting the mood, sounding very emotional itself. “Carolina” takes on more of a ballad form, complete with something of a small, dreary guitar solo towards the end.

“Would You Think Less of Me” is a song that recalls a life story of leaving loved ones and the pain of death and saying goodbye. The highlight and easily one of the strongest songs from Bradley Hathaway to date is the closer, “The World Is Screaming.” The lyrics are great, with lines such as “He came in the manger, He was born in the stable and He did what no man before Him was able.” There is also a constant acoustic guitar being strummed behind the vocals. The music to the song is great to, going beyond the acoustic stature and expanding to what sounds a full band effort, complete with the pounding drums that close out A Thousand Angry Panthers ever so nicely.

athousandangrypanthersepIf there are two kinds of people in this world, they could easily up be divided into two categories: those who love Bradley Hathaway, and those who just haven’t heard of him yet. If you’re hanging out in the former camp, then you know that Hathaway put his successful slam poetry career behind him with his 2007 musical endeavor The Thing That Poets Write About, The Thing That Singers Sing About. A little over a year and a half later, he returned to the music scene with A Mouth Full Of Dust. If you’re one of the unlucky folks who haven’t been introduced to Hathaway’s music, then you may only know him by the vaguely unsettling title of his newest offering, A Thousand Angry Panthers. If this is where your journey with Bradley Hathaway begins, you could not have picked a better time. Despite its unfortunately short runtime, A Thousand Angry Panthers arguably packs in more depressingly awesome melodies and profound lyrics than any collection of songs so far this year.

The EP starts off with the cello-infused “She Was Raised By A Man With A Sickness,” heavy on the lyrical content and light on the instrumentation as it tells the story of an emotionally battered young woman. Next is the contemplative “Carolina,” a powerful ballad filled with spiritual commentary and an expertly placed guitar part. “Would You Think Less Of Me” hauntingly explores a life filled with feelings that push the limits of the storyteller. The EP closes with the brutal “The World Is Screaming” that begins with elevated levels of emotional tension and ends with a powerful crash of voices, instruments, and pure lamentation.

Lyrically, A Thousand Angry Panthers is brilliantly and tantalizingly dark. Bradley’s songwriting ability has always been adept thanks to his success with poetry, but for this EP, he’s kicked it up a notch. Musically, A Thousand Angry Panthers is the next step up from his previous record, A Mouth Full Of Dust, and the emotions run just as deep. If there are any flaw within the EP, it’s that the four songs are simply not enough– the flow of the album seems to deserve more music.

EP review: bradley hathaway’s a thousand angry panthers

bradley hathaway's A Thousand Angry Panthers EP

it is a measure both of my impatience and love of a musical artist when i download an EP. when i heard that bradley hathaway had released one, i nearly dropped my phone on which i’d read the happy news. i wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. i had hoped for the filling meal of a full-length album (i’m musically greedy), but certainly a snack of this 4-song EP would at least hold my attention. oh, it did. if “a thousand angry panthers” is the bread basket, the waiter accidentally filled it with lembas bread (a lord of the rings reference, and in case you didn’t get it, lembas bread fills your stomach with one bite). hathaway opens with “she was raised by a man with a sickness,” a story about a girl framed unobtrusively by guitar and violin. it is a song that haunts without leaving the listener completely hopeless. he sings honestly but not morosely, his faith as open here as it is in his spoken-word. this is a theme that flows over into each successive song. “carolina” fills in the intrumentals and evokes stretches of green hills and cloudless sky–homey but not honkytonk as he sings “and the wind brings You closer to me.” it is a tune about home and quiet that manages to feel exactly like those things. “would you think less of me” is another story, a broken one with shades of piano and saloon blues. hathaway’s pain is shared with the listener in such a way that the most recent heartache is universal and relatable: “there is love, there is beauty, and then there is pain, and at the moment I can’t help but feel that they’re all the same.” packing a different emotional punch with the same intensity is the finisher “the world is screaming.” it is as urgent at the title, a cry to cry out as the world falls apart around us. it’s nearly a rock anthem, the biggest musically we’ve heard hathaway, and even non-christians could agree that “…we’re all waiting for a messiah to come, but we can’t agree on who he is and which is the one.” “a thousand angry panthers” excels at everything it attempts. hathaway sings stories enhanced by masterful–and often low-key–instrumentation and, though “just” an EP, it had the right amount of polish and the right about of bradley for a full-length release. each track is full and beautiful. at his lowest, he has created some of the most poignant music in his repetoire. hats off, sir, you’ve exceeded my expectations.

Devastatingly hard choice – Sleeping At Last and Bradley Hathaway are two of my favourite artists. I went with Sleeping At Last because they’ve had the most plays on my iTunes.
